It all started when Spence was a little boy and forever curious about how things worked.
By the time he went to college he had developed an interest in shooting and firearms. He was
on the college rifle team. From there he went into the Army and shot on the Army Rifle Team.
He was champion of France in the Military for 1000 yard open sight large bore rifles.
Later, while he owned his own business in Story Wyoming, Spence started shooting the black powder
rifles and took an indepth interest in shooting the "Old Warrior". Much to his amazement and
disappointment, his groups were far from his expectations. This is when it all began.... in 1975.
Then in the mid 1980's the desire to make the "Old Warrior" recognized for the outstanding shooting
companion that it is, Spence set off in earnest to find out why and how and write it down. From
years of work and research, the book came to be and the first edition was printed.
Much to our sadness, Spence passed away in 1993 from cancer. The greatest sadness is that he never
got to know how many people would come to revere his work or the success and notoriety that would
once again be given to the Original 45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine.
Pat Wolf, the co-author and devoted wife who spent countless hours researching with Spence enjoys the business very much
and has on several occasions passed up offers to sell the copyright because she loves hearing from everyone
and all of the wonderful letters she gets. There is great satisfaction in such hard work being so instrumental
in bringing a part of history back into our present with dignity and respect. Now, because of years of
painstaking research, study, notes and writing "umpteen" pages of facts "The Book" is widely read and many
shooters are met with great success of their own.
